In modern society, facts and figures manufacture the faith that allows us to believe - or not. This habit spills over into every aspect of our lives. We have even come to demand measureable results when we are dealing with essentially unknowable factors. In spite of the fact that we tend to view observable financial and political change as the most vital factors in comprehending our reality, the cultural and social dynamics of any system (much of it unseen) represent a significant field of study we ignore at our peril.
